Around Montana: Ash hires receivers coach

Rob Ash completed his Montana State football coaching staff on Wednesday, hiring former Kansas State quarterback Jonathan Beasley as the Bobcats' receivers coach.

Beasley played quarterback at Kansas State from 1996-2000, serving as team captain as a junior and senior. He was third-team All-Big 12 in 2000, and he earned MVP honors in the 2001 Cotton Bowl and 2000 Holiday Bowl. He was the Wildcats; team captain and MVP of the 2001 Hula Bowl, and he was a team captain for the 2001 East-West Shrine Game.“(Jonathan) has extensive experience in the Big 12 and in professional football, and brings a great knowledge of offensive football and the passing game to our program," Ash said. “He earned the reputation as a great leader as a player, and is known for his class, character and integrity."Most recently a graduate assistant at Emporia State, Beasley served as quarterbacks and running backs coach at Wichita North High last fall and coached JV and freshman quarterbacks at Cactus High in Glendale, Ariz., in 2003-04.Beasley had tryouts with the Wichita Aviators in the APFL (2005), the Wichita Stealth in Arena II (2004), the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars (2003), the NFL Detroit Lions (2003), and NFL Green Bay Packers (2001).

Keep kids busy on March break

Library staff brainstorm each year to come up with a variety of programs that will appeal to children of all ages, said Inge Saczkowski, manager of children's services.

"Some programs we bring back every year because they always sell out and we always try to give the kids an opportunity to see a big live show," she said.

The big show this year will be courtesy of Dan the Music Man.

Library programs include:

A visit by a menagerie of animals from Bird Kingdom of Niagara Falls.

Craft programs include spring wreaths, wall hangings, mobiles, bracelets and door hangers.

For a full description of programs including times and locations, visit www.nflibrary.ca.

Bounceback players: Furcal leads the way

Basically, everything Lugo hit went right at someone, and that's the biggest reason why his batting average dropped to a career low .237. Look for a rebound to his normal .270-plus average this year with at least 30 steals. Lugo's not exactly Jose Reyes, but as long as he doesn't bat like Mario Mendoza again, he can help you.

Nick Swisher, OF, White Sox

I don't really know what happened to Swisher last year. After a 35-homer, 95-RBI and 106-run breakout in 2006, Swisher slumped to 22-84-78 last season. But maybe, just maybe, last year was the fluke.

While Swisher's home run total took a nosedive, his extra-base total stayed nearly the same (71 in 2006, 69 in 2007). His walk rate also held steady, and he struck out 21 less times in 17 fewer at bats. With such a young guy having such an inexplicable decline, I'm willing to chalk it up as an aberration.

Clinton again hints at sharing ticket with Obama

Clinton has already sought to lower expectations for the contest in this state where Obama is expected to do well, largely because of his increasing appeal among black voters.

Mississippi's population is 37 percent black.

"I know that I may have an uphill battle here in the state, I appreciate that," Clinton said.

But even if she does not win the state, Clinton is trying to collect as many delegates as she can now that the race has turned into a numbers game; she slightly narrowed the gap with Obama this week when she won three primaries in Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.

Perhaps mindful that her audiences in Mississippi might view Obama favorably, Clinton has leaned more towards criticizing the Bush administration and has mostly refrained from direct attacks on her opponent.

TheStar.com | Sports | Grey Cup arrives at city hall

On hand to greet the Cup were a dozen fans, four times as many media and city hall's feral squirrels, which practically crawl up your leg in search of food. Amidst the fear, one was reminded of the words of Steve Coogan, "If it's between me and a crack squirrel, I will take that squirrel down. I will take that squirrel down to Chinatown."

After being marched into council chambers by an honour guard, Mayor David Miller took over. The city's first citizen relived his fondest CFL moments and almost managed to make them seem unscripted. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon the praised the city's love for "Canada's national game." In his defence, he was born in Chicago. But in his offence, I was born in Toronto and I don't think America's national pastime is hockey.

After that, Miller officially proclaimed this Grey Cup Week, which excited those fans to fits of shouting 'Go (Insert Winnipeg Blue Bombers or Saskatchewan Roughriders here)!' But when Miller finished his remarks with 'Go Riders,' the mood soured slightly.

Goldman ups writedown estimates for banks

GOLDMAN Sachs on Thursday raised its fourth-quarter estimates for billion-dollar asset writedowns at Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase and Merrill Lynch as a result of squeezed credit.

Goldman Sachs said it expects the financial markets would not fully absorb the current credit crises initially stemming from a US housing slump until mid-2008.

Rising foreclosures resulting from defaults on sub-prime mortgages - home loans given to people with poor credit histories - has tightened credit sharply since August.

"Although we have seen many firms take the appropriate actions in recent weeks as they relate to write-downs and capital raises, we still believe it will be a couple of quarters before the current credit crisis is fully digested by the markets,'' the Wall Street investment bank said in a note to clients.

Poets, Painters, and Portfolio Managers

David Landau came to Bard College intending to spend his undergraduate years sharpening his creative writing skills and immersing himself in the works of authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Jack Kerouac.

His plans changed when he learned last fall that the school planned to create a new economics and finance dual-degree undergraduate program. The five-year program would allow him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in literature and writing, while simultaneously obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and finance.

For Landau, also a math enthusiast, it was a tempting idea, one he never imagined he'd be able to take advantage of at a school like Bard, more known for its Shakespeare and theater classes than business offerings. "When I saw this program open up, I got very excited.

Hooper cautious over ground share

Chippenham Town chairman Derek Hooper says a potential groundshare between the Bluebirds and Trowbridge Town is far from agreed.

Hellenic League Division One West outfit Trowbridge are looking for a new temporary home while they build a new stadium on Bradley Road in the town.

They are waiting for planning permission from West Wiltshire District Council and will need a home for two seasons.

But Hooper has distanced himself from any speculation about an agreement, despite Trowbridge hosting Cheltenham Saracens at Hardenhuish Park on Saturday.

"It is a long way from being anywhere near tied up," said Hooper.

"It is still in the melting pot because the two leagues have got to agree it, the Wiltshire FA have got to agree it and, at the moment, the Wilts FA are not looking terribly hopeful."

SaaS - a CIO’s dream?

Application development and the satisfactory delivery of high quality enterprise applications are often viewed as impossible goals.

The maturity of Internet technologies for application development has seen fundamental trends emerging in the application development profession to ensure that higher levels of satisfaction are delivered.

This has forced enterprise application solution providers to re-think their deployment and delivery strategies and to ensure that any solution offered supports strategic business objectives. More importantly, these solution providers must offer enterprise applications that can keep up with and support the rapid changes in business objectives and operations.

Teleconferencing Gets Ready for Prime Time

Reaching a TelePresence studio, they press a phone pad button to make the call and start the meeting.

Cisco uses outside contractors, dubbed "advance technology partners," to manage build-outs. Those costs are part of the purchase price, via Cisco's service/support agreement. The telephony-based system has no monthly fees and its operating costs are comparable to that of a T-1 line, Cisco advises.

CISCO'S LEGAL TEAM

Mark Chandler, Cisco's senior vice president, secretary and general counsel, is -- as the saying goes -- eating his company's dog food. Chandler has enthusiastically embraced Cisco's TelePresence systems, and says their use has dramatically reduced his law department's national and international travel and meetings costs -- and carbon footprint.
