Georgia: Tbilisi Outraged At Moscow Withdrawal From Abkhaz Sanctions ...
During his annual start-of-the-year news conference on January 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that "many people assume that Russia has such a firm position on Kosovo and warns that [its declaration of independence] will set a precedent just because it [secretly wants this] to happen in order to begin recognizing" other regions declaring independence near Russia. But he insisted that "the Russian leadership has never said that after Kosovo we will immediately recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia." However, Russia's conciliatory statements have increasingly been replaced with tough talk since Kosovo's declaration of independence on February 17 -- placing the Western darling Georgia in the middle of the fray. "Russia now is using the politics of sticks and carrots toward Georgia.
Federal judge shutters Wikileaks.org for posting bank documents
SAN FRANCISCO A federal judge has set off a free-speech tempest after shutting down a U.S. Web site for posting internal documents accusing a Cayman Islands' bank branch of money laundering and tax-evasion schemes. The Bank Julius Baer & Co. said in papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco that a disgruntled executive fired for "misconduct" stole the documents and illegally posted them on Wikileaks.org. The bank also said a number of the documents have been altered, but it didn't provide details. The site claims to have posted 1.2 million leaked government and corporate documents that it says expose unethical behavior, including a 2003 operation manual for the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The bank, based in Zurich, sued Wikileaks and its San Mateo hosting company Dynadot on Feb.
Radio Talk
Find a new morning show elsewhere and have them take three to five years to become a big hit (or not). Or bring in a syndicated show like Rick & Bubba and hope it works immediately? (That didn't work with Bob & Tom or John Boy and Billy). Or just leave it as a "more music" show with no personality? Here's the pool of potential local available (if not always compatible) talent: Steve Barnes, Jimmy Baron, Tim Rhodes, Southside Steve Rickman, Eric "Shark" from Dave FM, Gary "Wally" Wallace. Fin will be covering for now. I hear Tim Andrews (known on the show as Porn Czar) is out, too, I hear. And I have a feeling Larry and Eric won't be sticking together. Then again, they said in 2004 they'd never work together again after the first dismissal. You have to wonder if either will be able to find a job in the Atlanta market again.

Gonzales, a college student and executive director of Campus Alliance for Progress. He said he discovered the problems in Dukes' reports after reviewing several candidates' files for a friend. He denied being part of Thompson's campaign: "I never met Brian Thompson." Dukes' violations, which she's acknowledged, is hardly news. It was first reported in December and she promised to correct the reports. Her opponent, Brian Thompson, has complained because it's been more than 40 days and Dukes has not corrected the reports. "Elected officials should never be too busy to follow the law, nor should they act as if they are above the law," Thompson said. Dukes said her opponent is just trying to distract her from their March 4 Democratic primary showdown.

Toll road rejected
A man in an orange shirt frowned in disgust as he walked passed Malecha, a surfer who recently moved to the county from Oahu, Hawaii.About 30 feet away, toll-road opponent Chris Pearson of San Diego and project supporter Robert Ruiz of Riverside, a construction union representative, were debating the merits of the $875 million project."If you don't address the congestion on the (Interstate) 5 freeway now, we'll pay the price 20 years from now," Ruiz told Pearson. Ruiz said the traffic congestion only will get much worse and, with it, the environment, as more car-belched emissions foul the air and aggravate global warming. But Pearson maintained that congestion is going to get worse in any case."I'd rather have people fighting traffic than ruin the beach," he said.Referring to Trestles Beach, which is just west of where the proposed toll road would tie into I-5, Pearson said: "This is one of the best breaks in all of California."Ruiz said there were economic reasons for supporting the project, as well.
A year later, Chief Illiniwek debate remains at U. Illinois
Other University traditions have not been retired along with the Chief. The traditional music that was played when the Chief was the symbol is still played by the Marching Illini during halftime of sporting events at the University. "There are people who say there's too much expression of the Chief Illiniwek still," said Tom Hardy, executive director for University relations. "They don't want him on homecoming parades, and they would change performance music from the band that pre-dates Chief Illiniwek because they associate it with the Chief." Miranda Jimenez, junior in LAS, said she feels that using the traditional music of the Chief is encouraging people to hold on to the negative ideology the Chief represented. "I think (the music) evokes the same ideologies of having a person perform traditional dances, and that's offensive," Jimenez said.

For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: the smartest woman in the world complains about sexism in the campaign (paragraph breaks removed): In an interview with ABC News' Cynthia McFadden to air on this evening's "Nightline," Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., says it's tougher for her to run as a woman than it is for her male opponent. Asked why she thinks so many women may be feeling sorry for her, Clinton said, "I think a lot of women project their own feelings and their lives onto me, and they see how hard this is. It's hard. It's hard being a woman out there. It is obviously challenging with some of the things that are said that are not even personal to me so much as they are about women."..."Every so often I just wish that it were a little more of an even playing field," she said, "but, you know, I play on whatever field is out there."...But apparently Clinton thinks -- based on this comment -- that the "playing field" is easier for a black man than a white woman.
