Board's D.C. trip costs you $10k

Amid threats to cut jobs and close health clinics and courthouses, Cook County Board President Todd Stroger and almost half of the County Board are set to get away from it all this weekend in Washington, D.C., at taxpayer expense.

County taxpayers are set to cough up almost $10,000 for Stroger, his cousin -- county finance chief Donna Dunnings -- seven commissioners and others to attend the National Association of Counties' annual legislative conference, an event one commissioner who attended in the past called "a beyond-worthless boondoggle" that serves only as "an excuse to take a trip."

Action sought against Virk

In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at rural development, the Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) proposes to set up a training institute for farmers and unemployed youth at Zira in Punjab.

To be spread over an area of 10 acres and completed in 18 months the institute would impart training to the beneficiaries in various vocational activities with a view to increasing their family income, banks executive director Allen CA Pereira, told The Tribune here today.

After training, the beneficiaries would get loans at subsidised rates for starting their ventures besides getting the benefits of the government's subsidy, Atul Gautam, general manager, informed.

Pereira, who was here to inaugurate bank's onsite ATM in Sector 47 here, said the bank was also in the process of promoting solar energy projects in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Uttarakhand to help solve the power shortage problems in these states.

Researchers solve decade-old mystery of hydrogen storage material

Environmentally friendly hydrogen gas fueled vehicles can dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen the countrys dependence on sources of fossil fuel. Though several hydrogen vehicles exist on the market today, there is still much room for improvement in the way that hydrogen is stored on-board the vehicle. With current technologies, hydrogen gas storage tanks have to be as large as or larger than the trunk of a car to carry enough gas to travel only one to two hundred miles. .

Charity Begins at Home Sales

In the market for a retirement home last spring, design engineer Douglas Knapman says he looked at 20 communities before deciding on The Settings at Mackay Point in Yemassee, S.C.

What tipped the balance wasn't the golf course, swimming pools or fitness center. It was a presentation at an open house by developer Richard McWhorter, who invited people to take part in a fishing tournament he was underwriting to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In addition to donating $15,000 to the foundation -- an employee has two children with the disease -- Mr. McWhorter offered to cover the $1,200 entry fee for any resident or home buyer who would take part in the fund-raising tournament.

YoYoGames.com celebrates 100,000th registered user in just 10 months

YoYo Games is excited to announce that more than 100,000 members have already joined the YoYoGames.com development community, still just in its beta stages. That's 10,000 new registered users a month for each of their first 10 months online, and the growth is accelerating.

"We're very excited about this landmark" says Sandy Duncan, CEO, "registered users may represent less than 10% of our traffic, but they're very special to us. These are the guys making games and generating the content that makes YoYo what it is. We believe we're now the biggest casual games developer community anywhere in the world, and that's pretty amazing"

The evidence certainly suggests that the YoYo user-generated casual gaming formula is striking a cord, and the reason is clear. YoYo's approach brings games development to people who previously couldn't even have considered it.

Experts in San Antonio's real estate market remain cautiously optimistic about commercial prospects around the city.

Six panelists discussed the pros and cons of the market Thursday at a Commercial Real Estate Women's forum at the Convention Center.

"We will never be the sexiest kid on the block," said Mark Granados, managing partner with HPI Real Estate Services & Investments. But he added that San Antonio still has a lot in its favor, such as several job-growth industries.

In North Central San Antonio, big things are continuing to happen with Park North, the 1-million-square-foot Central Park Mall redevelopment project led by HPI.

Brighton bans windmills

Brighton council came under fire this week for a sudden decision to ban windmills across the municipality pending a review.

The by-law was passed without prior public discussion and forbids any person to erect, construct or expand a windmill for at least one year.

The unexpected decision comes despite provincial support for increased use of renewable energy and worldwide efforts to promote the technology as part of a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Rob Taylor, president of the local Green Party, said: I think it is a step in the wrong direction.

We are running out of non-renewable fuels and people that are making an effort to use renewable energy sources should be commended not held back, he said.

The by-law is to remain in place pending a wider review of land use.

Developers licking their fingers over Cocoa Touch iPhone SDK

At a special press event today in Cupertino, Apple revealed details of the official—and long-awaited—iPhone SDK. Building on the foundation of OS X and marrying it with a multitouch specific UI layer, Apple is calling the collection of APIs "Cocoa Touch." Included in the SDK are updates to Interface Builder and Xcode to enable development with the new APIs, as well as an iPhone simulator to test development from your Mac before debugging on the iPhone itself. In addition, debugging and profiling tools work from a Mac-connected iPhone.

The SDK includes everything you'd expect from an Apple environment, including the UNIX-based internals of OS X. In addition, developers will have access to Keychain, Bonjour, SQLite and Core Location as well as a mature, Quicktime-based media layer including video playback, Core Audio, Core Image, Core Animation, PDF rendering, OpenAL, and OpenGL ES.

'Wiki bill' relies on Coloradans to fix I-70 congestion

Colorado Sen. Chris Romer on Friday launched a citizen effort to craft legislation addressing the congestion on Interstate 70.

I-70 is the major east-west artery through Colorado, and on weekends carries thousands of people from the Denver area into the state's ski resort areas.

Romer, D-Denver, calls his effort at involving citizens in the legislative process a "wiki bill," and says it's a first for the country.

The name comes from the online encyclopedia called Wikipedia, which is written and edited by users. A "wiki" is a generic term for a website where users can contribute their ideas.

"My fervent hope is that the collective brain of all of Colorado is at least as powerful as the people in the Capitol," said Romer. "I believe that Colorado's pioneering spirit can solve this problem and fix I-70 now."

Romer's soliciting ideas for his wiki bill online at groups.google.com/group/fixI70now.
