Automated Killer Robots ‘Threat to Humanity’: Expert

If you murdered your neighbor and stole his property could that be described as 'winning". When you start out with an evil premise there is no way to turn it respectable. I am disturbed at the continuing dehumanization of this murdering. The same stuff they use on them can be used on us. Most of the people they are killing are innocent. They do have the right to defend themselves against imperial occupiers. Anyone who opposes them they call terrorists. Are you a terrorist? The real terorists are the ones who launched this illegal war based on lies.

Pentagon Aide's Invitations Contradicted U.S. Policy

At the urging of a subordinate, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England scheduled at least two meetings with foreign emissaries in direct contradiction of U.S. policy at the time. The meetings date back to 2005. They involved a Lebanese ambassador considered a proxy for the Syrian government and a leading member of Syria's Muslim Brotherhood.

U.S. policy at the time was not to engage in talks with either man, because they represent groups with whom the United States was not to communicate. The meetings were organized by England's special assistant for international affairs, Hesham Islam.

An invitation to Muslim Brotherhood official Husam al-Dairi was canceled in late 2005 after a senior State Department official heard about it and insisted it not take place.

Israel broke law with use of cluster bombs in Lebanon: HRW

Human Rights Watch said Sunday that Israel breached international law when it bombed southern Lebanon with cluster weapons in 2006.

A 131-page report "Flooding South Lebanon: Israeli Use of Cluster Munitions in Lebanon in July and August 2006", made available to reporters at the United Nations Headquarters, said that Israel violated international humanitarian law with hundreds of "indiscriminate and disproportionate cluster munitions attacks on Lebanon."

Human Rights Watch said Israel had rained as many as 4.6 million submunitions, or cluster bomblets, across southern Lebanon - mostly in the final days of the war.

The report's lead author, Bonnie Docherty, said the United Nations must investigate whether Israel deliberately targeted civilians with the munitions.

Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"

No Zags: Candidate endorsement is one of the most antiquated and soon-to-be-extinct functions of the newspaper industry. In a world where anybody can publish any opinion they want and anyone can read it, it seems pretty silly that the "wise old minds" of an editorial board still feel the need to put a newspaper's stamp of approval on a political position. Endorsements are relics of the old-journalism past, as are editorials.

Question: I'm curious about the last sentence of No Zags' comment. Are editorials, indeed, relics. Or are the still important contributions to the public dialogue -- and help form community opinion?

Manley recommends extending Afghan mission

You and I both know the manley panel on Canada's mission in Afghanistan (combat versus a purely humanitarian only) is akin to asking a panel made up of don cherry, bobby clarke, bob probert to advise Canadians on fighting in hockey.

It would be imposible to find a more hawkish individual who labels themselves Liberal. It is his reson d'etre.

Kabul is the original UN and Nato mission (in the North) where Canada spent 4 years building schools, hospitals, homes, water supplies, democracy building, and development aid. That mission is still continuing with the help of 30 countries under the UN mandate, and is reaping considerable success.

Canadian troops were respected, appreciated and not once attacked by the population as an invasion force in Kabul, since they were a force for good.
