The one you don't see coming is often the sweetest of all. That is why of all the championships won by all the teams through all the years in this sports crazy town, the 1968 Jets, the '69 Mets and the '96 Yankees are the ones we remember most fondly.

Belichick shows he has no class February 5, 2008

Sometimes a man’s character, if not his whole life, can be encapsulated in the blink of an eye. For Scottie Pippen, it was the moment he decided to sit down rather than play out the last 1.8 seconds of a crucial playoff game when he learned the final shot would not be his. For Mike Tyson, it was the moment he decided it would be easier to bite his way out of a beating from Evander Holyfield than to face it.

For Santana, big bucks mean big pressure February 4, 2008

Johan Santana, welcome to the neighborhood.

Rampage look to rebound with a new coach and more playmakers

This franchise dates all the way back to the AFL's first game in 1987. Over the years, this team has been the Washington Commandos, Detroit Drive, Massachusetts Marauders and now the Grand Rapids Rampage. They have struggled in the past several seasons after winning the AFL Championship in 2001, and they are trying to get back to being a playoff-caliber team. They have local ownership from Dan DeVos and they are very community-oriented, but they are in a small market, which always presents challenges.

Coaches and front office

Steve Thonn is the new coach and director of football operations. He comes to Grand Rapids with high expectations because of the success he had while running Georgia's offense the past three seasons. He is considered a great playcaller and a tremendous QB developer, but he will have his hands full with the Rampage.

Barfoot Snowboards Turns 30

His hands are strong and worn, his face weathered from a life spent smiling in the sun and surf, his language peppered with words fit only for R-rated films, and his laughter, frequent and contagious, reeks of slightly dangerous fun. Spend even a short time talking with him and you are guaranteed stories at every turn in the conversation, ranging from nude wine stomps and barefoot hell runs on skateboards down Hot Springs Road to rock climbing chaos with his 90-pound dog Wakunda hanging off him and billy goats kicking rocks onto his head 40 feet up a rock face.

Barfoot is the type of person who, you suspect, should you encounter trouble on the trail or waves or snow, would put a reassuring arm over your shoulder, make light of the situation, and pass you a whiskey-filled flask to ease the pain.

Rangers' McCarthy hits a roadblock

It kept hurting and didn't loosen up. I don't know what else to say about it. It's not fun."

McCarthy will be evaluated today in Surprise by Rangers team physician Keith Meister. General manager Jon Daniels and manager Ron Washington said they aren't leaping to any conclusions about McCarthy's status.

McCarthy was expected to start the Rangers' fourth game of the season April 4 at Anaheim in 27 days.

The injury already caused the right-hander to miss 15 days of spring training. A similar layoff would give him only 12 days to get ready for that first start of the season.

The Rangers have some flexibility. They won't need a fifth starter until April 12. If McCarthy isn't ready by then, Luis Mendoza likely would be the first alternate.

"We haven't talked about any plans," Washington said.

Gov's name comes up in first 10 minutes of Rezko case

It took only about 10 minutes for Gov. Blagojevich's name to surface in the corruption trial of Tony Rezko.

In the prosecution's opening statement today, Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie Hamilton told jurors the Rezko case focuses on a violation of the public trust orchestrated by Rezko and Stuart Levine, a member of two state-government boards over which Rezko held considerable sway.

Read the complete text! Rochester's Hills' State of the City address

Good Evening.

I want to welcome you to the 2008 State of the City Address and thank you for the opportunity to update the community on the status and condition of our fine City. I want to personally thank all of you for attending this event in our newest facility and sincerely thank all of the members of the Department of Public Services who have helped us put this evening together.

We have never held the address outside of city hall but I felt it would be a great opportunity to showcase our newest facility to the people who own it, our residents.

This required a tremendous amount of effort from a large number of city employees and I sincerely appreciate it. Don't complain though, if you think this is different, next year I want to hold the State of the City -- underwater!

I also want to recognize some very important people in the room tonight.

Barnsley 0-0 Chelsea

He still manages to get in a shot which Cudicini does well to block with his legs. This is good stuff from Barnsley.

43 min: A really strange match, this. Long periods of absolutely bugger all to report, then the odd burst of hectic activity. Of which this isn't one. Still, it's better than Middlesbrough v Sheffield United. Chewing tin foil while being shot in the face would be better than Middlesbrough v Sheffield United. Here, in the absence of fun, allow us to SEXX YA UP. "Short shorts are essential apparel for 2008," pants Russell Child. "Gone are the days of Peter Beardsley, Kevin Keegan and Joe Jordan. Football players are much more attractive now. Let Fernando Torres and Ronaldo lead the way." Not everyone, however, is in the mood to see football's sexface. "Can you please stop eroticising Joe Cole," pleads Julian Menz.
