Dining, drinking choices reflect SW Valley's diversity

The Super Bowl is behind us and the tens of thousands of visitors who came to Arizona for the excitement have returned to their homes with a positive impression of the Valley. Glendale's success with the Super Bowl affects us all. Another thing that affects all of us is the wonderful diversity of businesses in the Southwest Valley. The Cracker Barrel Restaurant takes patrons back to the days of the old-fashioned country store and family-style restaurant. On your way to be seated, you make your way through the country store where you can find products ranging from candy bars to rocking chairs. The food is homestyle, prepared from scratch in their kitchen. .

It's still a Big Easy feast

A tiny woman sitting next to us at the bar was well on her way to polishing off both halves along with a bottle of Beck's that was preceded by a cocktail or two. Let's face it, New Orleans is not for teetotalers or strict adherents of a carb-free diet.

'Bar-muda Triangle'

After our Bywater hosts had polished off their share of the Domeliese's and Parasol's dividends, they suggested a crawl through some Bywater watering holes that are part of what's known as the "Bar-muda Triangle." I'd never been to either but was immediately struck by their down-home nature, which is a perfect antidote to too much enforced conviviality in the French Quarter.

First up was Vaughn's Lounge. The name of the place is spelled out in nickels pressed into the worn stone stoop.

Many gamers infuriated by required Windows upgrade

DirectX is a collection of tools that facilitate communication between hardware and Microsoft operating systems; all Windows release since 95, and the Xbox and Xbox 360 operating systems, use it. Each DirectX release brings new graphics technologies and performance improvements, ideally leading to increasingly visually compelling software.

The arrival of DirectX 10 was much anticipated. Unfortunately, it's also been heavily criticized. DirectX 10 was released as an exclusive for Microsoft's latest desktop OS, Windows Vista, leaving Windows XP (and 2000) users comfortable with their current setup chagrined.

Internet firm cuts racist's Web site

An Internet service company has pulled the plug on its most controversial customer, a Roanoke white supremacist who used his Web site to suggest that six black youths be lynched.

Global Web Solutions cut off service to William A. White on Sunday, after receiving complaints about White's online commentary on the so-called Jena Six case in Louisiana, company owner Randy Armbrecht said Wednesday.

White has since restored the Web site, although not all of the previous links have been updated.

In a posting last week, White published the names and addresses of six black youths charged with assaulting a white classmate in Jena, La., along with the words: "Lynch the Jena 6."

The FBI is investigating whether that broke any laws -- a decision that Armbrecht said he has already made.

After big wins by Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama seeks to regain ...

CASPER, Wyo. - Sen. Barack Obama sought to regain lost momentum in Wyoming's caucuses days after rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's nearly clean sweep of major primaries in their tight Democratic presidential race.

Twelve national convention delegates are at stake Saturday in caucuses around the state, a small but critical prize in the close race for the party's nod. The epic battle between Clinton and Obama has given the state's Democrats — outnumbered more than 2-to-1 by Republicans — a relevancy they haven't experienced in a presidential race in nearly 50 years.

Clinton won victories Tuesday in primaries in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island, reviving her candidacy. But Obama has prevailed in 12 of the 15 caucuses, which rely on greater campaign organization and voter commitment than primaries.

Rights and Rockets

I was home two weeks ago, getting ready for evening prayers, sitting with my wife and child, and suddenly my mobile starting ringing. He said, I'm Rami, I'm from Shabak the Israeli security agency Shin Bet and I'm responsible for your area. What are you doing? I guess you're with your wife and your two children?' I said no, and he said Yes, your two children are with you, but now you've just moved out of the room'. I said, what do you want? He said If you don't stop your rockets it's only a matter of time before you are targeted'."

Anyone who has ever seen a modern spy movie knows what you're supposed to do next: hurl the phone as far as you can and then dive from the building before it or the telephone explodes. Next, go underground, and never use a phone or a computer again.

Electoral Commission can end Wendy’s career … or damage its own ...

Our own Wendy Alexander's case is with the Electoral Commission, and the deputy leader of the Labour Party, Harriet Harman, also accepted an impermissible donation. Questions have been raised about the reported £300,000 donation to Labour from Glasgow-based businessman Imran Khand, through a front organisation, the Muslim Friends of Labour.

No doubt there will be others. The mystery is why Labour politicians were so ignorant of their own law. The Electoral Commission assigned £180,000 for education programmes to ensure party officers and elected members would be in no doubt of their obligation to obey the letter of it. Not money well spent, it seems.

But Labour politicians are incensed. Suddenly they've realised that no-one is safe from this terminator statute.
