EGYPT: Torture Ruling Boosts Rights

The infamous video clip dates back to 2006 when police officer Islam Nabih arrested the victim; a young man in the poor Cairo neighbourhood of Bulaq, who was known for challenging police officers and standing up against their harsh methods.

To break his will and make an example of him before others, the officer and his assistant Reda Fathy from Bulaq Dakrur police station in Giza governorate decided to sexually abuse the man on tape and show it around.

The graphic tape shows the two men handcuffing the victim behind his back and using a broom stick on his anus. They ordered the victim to call himself names and to say that he was actually a woman.

Kabir's loud screams for mercy inspired several documentaries and TV shows on pan-Arab TV stations on torture and abuse in Egyptian and Arab prisons.

The things the little girl said

She talked about how he "played barbershop" and cut her hair, and said the sexual abuse happened once, at his house, with his fingers, knuckles and hands.

"Actually," the little girl said, "it happened two times."

"When was the other time?" the interviewer asked.

"I think it was Tuesday."

"Okay."

"Well, no, last week was Wednesday. I think probably he touched me on that day."

"Okay."

"It was," the little girl finally said. "I asked my mom. She said it was Wednesday. So I believed her."

This interview lasted 42 minutes. The interviewer wrote in her report that the child had given "clear disclosure of sex acts." The little girl, she wrote, should be kept away from her father.

Documentary-maker tapped to head interreligious group

Longtime public television producer Tom Spencer was named the new CEO of Austin Area Interreligious Ministries, Austin's largest interfaith organization, on Thursday night at the nonprofit group's annual meeting.

Spencer, 51, a popular program host on Austin's public television station, KLRU, succeeds the Rev. Emilee Whitehurst, who left last year to become director of the Rothko Chapel in Houston.

Behind the scenes, EU splits over Kosovo

The Ottomans brought Islamisation with them, particularly in towns, and later also created the Vilayet of Kosovo as one of the Ottoman territorial entities. Kosovo was taken by the Austrian forces during the Great War of 1683–1699 with help of 5,000 Albanians and their leader, the Catholic Archbishop Pjetër Bogdani. In 1690, the Serbian Patriarch of Peć Arsenije III, who previously escaped a certain death, led 37,000 families from Kosovo to evade Ottoman wrath, since Kosovo had just been retaken by the Ottomans. The people who followed him were mostly Serbs, but they were likely followed by other ethnic groups. Due to the oppression from the Ottomans, other migrations of Orthodox people from the Kosovo area continued throughout the 18th century. It is also noted that some Serbs adopted Islam, while some even gradually fused with other groups, predominantly Albanians, adopting their culture and even language, essentially leaving a predominantly Islamic presence in Kosovo.[citation needed]

In 1766, the Ottomans abolished the Patriarchate of Peć and the position of Christians in Kosovo was greatly reduced.

Safe behind the wheel

We're so new (as) drivers and I just think kids make rash decisions," Emily said. "It's not just about drinking and driving. It's about road rage, speeding, text messaging and not wearing your seat belt."

Their efforts earned them second place in the 2006-07 FBLA state competition and the chance to go to national competition.

And that's where it ended.

Sort of.

This year, Denise Russo, and Hailey Mackin, both 16, have taken the wheel of the CARS project. Last week, the two conducted mandatory assemblies in the school theater for all River Ridge High School students.

Denise and Hailey were understandably nervous when they took to the stage. Not an unusual emotion when some of your peers - perhaps the "invincible" kind - are laughing it up in the back rows.

Cyclone hits Mozambique

Cyclone Jokwe lashed Mozambique Island before hitting the northern coastal province of Nampula, traveling with winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour, Radio Mozambique said.

No casualties have been reported and the extent of the damage is not yet known.

The government declared a red alert, the highest level, in Nampula and a lesser, yellow, alert in the central provinces amid fears the storm will cause more damage.

Cyclone Jokwe is moving in a southwesterly direction toward the inland districts of Nampula and is expected to hit the central province of Zambezia on Monday, bringing with it moderate rain.

The cyclone brushed the northern tip of Madagascar on Wednesday before crossing the Mozambique Channel.

Flooding - the worst since 2001 when 800 people died - is slowly subsiding in many parts of northern and central Mozambique.

Six years later, how has Hezbollah used and manipulated the media?

His introductory remarks, reminiscent of an Oscar acceptance speech, offered profuse thanks to the media for its wartime efforts in aiding Hezbollah:

In the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate.

First of all and in the name of the resistance I would like to thank you as well as the television management and all workers, journalists, and media men in this establishment for the large efforts you made during the war. You, just like other institutions — to be fair to all — were our voice and the voice of the resistance men and steadfast people who want glory, dignity, and loftiness for this country. Of course, any words of thanks to you and all those who acted in solidarity with the resistance in this war fall short of what should be said but they must be said. Thank you.

Hart's hoax leaves mark on society

Ever did a quick Yahoo! search for recruiting sites? If so, it probably wasn't so quick after all because they are so many to choose from. Recruiting is no longer reserved for the periods leading up to signing day. It's become a 365-days-a-year business, where some guy sitting behind a keyboard in the middle of nowhere is so obsessed with where the next Johnny Come Lately is bound for that he will do anything - (ITALICS) anything (ITALICS END) - to beat the competition. Message boards and chat rooms eat the latest gossip up. Some of the most viewed stories on the Web last week involved (what else?) recruiting.

Sports are no longer about teaching youth the core values, such a sportsmanship and teamwork. The days when they were just about having some fun after school vanished years ago.

Ralph Kiner - 1955 :

Colavito did return to the Tribe in 1965, but his best seasons were behind him and on July 29, 1967 the Indians once again traded "The Rock", this time to the Chicago White Sox. November 29, 1971 - Tribe Swaps FlameThrower for SpitBaller: For about a five year period that began in the mid-sixties "Sudden" Sam McDowell was truly the most dominant strike-out pitcher in the American League and reached the 20 win mark for the only time in his career in 1970. But, his numbers declined during the 1971 season and that winter the Indians shipped him to San Francisco for veteran starter Gaylord Perry and light hitting shortstop Frank Duffy. Perry's first season in the American League was a big success as he posted a 24-16 record and a 1.92 ERA with the 5th place Indians. He was named the 1972 American League Cy Young award winner.
