Brasch Words
Told the Rocky Mountain News, 'If I can help people focus on preparedness, how to be better prepared in their homes and better prepared in their businesses - because that goes straight to the bottom line - then I hope I can help the country in some way.' Now, that's altruism. He's a real patriot. Will probably make more from consulting than he ever did on the federal payroll. Even has a fancy office in Washington, D.C." That fancy office, I learned, was in the high-rent posh office suite of Joe M. Allbaugh, who ran President George W. Bush's first campaign for the White House. For his loyalty, but certainly with almost no knowledge of emergency management, Allbaugh became Mr. Bush's first FEMA director before he resigned to become a consultant and lobbyist. Allbaugh bestowed the nation's disaster response upon his college buddy Michael Brown.
Schools draw parents into ISAT prep game
Families usually pack the gym at Elgin's Harriet Gifford Elementary School to root for basketball players or applaud young thespians, but one night last week, they saved their cheers for standardized-test questions. As pressure to perform well on tests mounts, schools have used pep rallies and prizes to motivate students. Now, they're also recruiting parents to help prepare kids for the state exams. .

Atlanta Music Scene
With Roth, what you see is what you get: a middle-aged man in tight leather pants prancing around for much of the show in embroidered jackets that were probably stolen from the Sgt. Pepper. He twirled the mike stand like an oversized baton and attempted a few leg kicks — but not too many. He does look better than most rockers his age. (See Mike Reno of Loverboy.) His vocals served the songs just fine most of the time even if the sound mix meant you couldn't understand him half the time. (And if you know the lyrics already and are singing along, who cares?) Eddie was better during his last visit to Atlanta. To make matters worse, during his extended guitar solo, the sound went out partway through, diluting what is often a highlight of any Van Halen concert. Even after he got his sound back, the mix was confoundingly bad during the final pre-encore song "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love." The guitar was too loud and Roth's vocals were swallowed up.
AAAS: State of the Art in Nuclear Physics-Experiment
Rounding out my AAAS coverage, we have the rest of an overview of the cutting edge research in the field of nuclear physics. My first article from this seminar focused on the theoretical and computational side; this article will focus on recent work on the experimental side. This portion of the seminar consisted of three experimentalists discussing their work, and one researcher discussing medical applications of nuclear physics. The first talk was given by Dr. Elizabeth Beise, a professor of physics at the University of Maryland. She examined parity violation in electron scattering experiments. She started by highlighting how experiments can link various theories that work at very disparate length scales. While the new hotness in particle and experimental high energy physics is the Large Hadron Collider, which will slam protons into one another, she discussed using electrons as a simpler probe.
Torsell: Court swayed by bias
On Sept. 26, 2007, a Centre County jury convicted Torsell of vehicular homicide and aggravated assault while driving under the influence, and Centre County Judge Thomas Kistler sentenced him to nearly six years in prison. "[Stidd's] family wanted him to have his day in court as well," Centre County Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane said. Keith McClellan, a Torsell family friend who was in the courtroom the first day of the trial, testified that he noticed the jury members' "furtive glances" toward Stidd as he was wheeled from the courtroom about 10 feet from the closest juror. "I noticed that Aaron Stidd had been wheeled to the front. There were a number of people milling around him," McClellan said. Referring to the accident as "a murder that didn't happen," Sloane said he believes the jury was burdened more with sympathy for Torsell, adding that in Stidd's hour in the courtroom, he "looked surprisingly well, relative to what he had been through." Sloane also cited a note signed unanimously by jurors, asking Kistler to be lenient with Torsell's sentencing.

From the Editor :
He was eyeing off one of the chicks and asked me whether he should give her his number or email. I suggested email (being overseas and all) so I wonder how lucky he got or whether he actually gave a crap what I thought. And ....good old Shoaib, got to hand it to him, he knows how to pick up the ladies. He was back and forth, chatting up different babes and I must admit, the ladies seemed to be giggling like school girls when he left (probably to chat up a dozen more). .
