| The way it used to be, kids...
I would not have liked to live back then," laughs 10-year-old Jack Heap, a Year 6 pupil. "Going on the walk was great, especially looking at the old wells."Fellow classmate, Kiera Janicwiez, 11, agrees."It must have been quite hard living back then but I have enjoyed finding out all about it. "It was especially interesting to learn about a pub that was called The Anchor which used to be a field that belongs to my grandad."The book contains descriptions of what it was like to be a child in the village in an age when there were few cars and they could safely play in the streets, sledging in winter all the way from the chapel to the stream. There are descriptions too of how the village sounded with church bells ringing out and cartwheels and clogs clattering over the cobbles, as well as the "knock-upper" who woke mill workers by rattling a long pole against their windows.Other topics include health, families, the home, washing, communications, clothes, play and entertainment, community, transport and travel and religion.Head teacher of St Mary's, Simon Scott, said the book had been enjoyed by all children at the school."It was Year 5 and Year 6 who went on the walk and have been involved in the main but we have put other copies in our library and all the children, of all ages have been interested.
Dems Should Thank Nader, Not Trash Him
Hillary Clinton blamed Ralph Nader this weekend for Al Gore's 2000 loss to George W. Bush. She's hardly the first to make such a statement, but the comment reveals the patronizing attitudes that still pervade her party. Barack Obama wasn't much nicer, saying Nader "did not know what he was talking about" when he claimed there was no difference between Bush and Gore. But it's Clinton's comments that really got to me: She said categorically that Nader "is responsible for George W. Bush." She's wrong. You know who is "responsible" for Bush being elected? Gore. The Democratic Party. The American public. I first became aware of Nader as a high-school senior in 1996. I didn't get to vote that year - the election was held about five weeks before I turned 18 - but I would have voted for him.
Romney Says He Will Penalize States With Sanctuary Cities, Driver's ...
ATKINSON, N.H. Republican Mitt Romney tried to link rivals Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday, suggesting the two share a "sanctuary state of mind" when it comes to illegal immigration. First in a new TV ad and then on the stump, the former Massachusetts governor accused Clinton, a Democratic senator from New York, of favoring amnesty for the more than 10 million illegal immigrants already in the country. He also criticized Giuliani, a fellow Republican, for encouraging illegal immigration by discouraging their prosecution while he was mayor of New York. "I think that sanctuary state of mind has to end in this country," Romney said after speaking to voters at a local farmstand. He suggested retracting federal funding for cities that harbor illegal immigrants and for states that provide driver's licenses and in-state tuition rates for their children.
Male Fertility May Be Harmed By Mix Of Endocrine Disrupters
ScienceDaily (Feb. 26, 2008) Endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which are harmless individually in small doses, can together be a dangerous cocktail. Concurrent exposure to several endocrine-disrupting substances may, among other things, result in malformed sexual organs. Risk assessments of chemical substances should therefore take potential cocktail effects into account. .
Katie Lee Joel's cookin' up a rock-star life
But Katie's cool, like she's back home in West Virginia on a lazy summer afternoon making a little something to eat with her grandma, the woman who taught her to love the kitchen. ''I have always loved cooking, since I was a little girl,'' says Katie, 26, whose first cookbook, The Comfort Table (Simon Spotlight Entertainment, $25), to be published in late April, features down-home recipes from her days of growing up around farmers. Granddad kept a big garden, and his cousins raised cows and pigs. ''My grandma would bring a stool over to the counter so that I could help her. My favorite was making biscuits, because it was like Play-Doh,'' Katie says. ``If I slept in, and she had already made the biscuits for breakfast, that was when I would have my little cry. She would always end up having to make more just so that I could help.'' The kitchen in the Joels' winter home is big and fancy.

Ketamine to be re-classified
Ketamine is a general anaesthetic used for medical and veterinary purposes and the government is acting on a recommendation from the Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs to classify it. Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell says while only a small number of people use it illegally, it can be harmful. He says evidence show it is not an addictive drug but it is habit-forming and people can build up a tolerance to it. Bell says the classification will have a small, but positive effect. There will be even tighter controls around the storage of the drug and increased penalties for its importation, possession, manufacture, or supply for illicit purposes. Associate Minister of Health Jim Anderton will still be able to be used as a prescription-only medicine by vets and doctors, but they would need to keep it in an "approved" locked metal or concrete cupboard or compartment.

Pakistan's victors may lack strength to oust Musharraf
But Malik said most senior members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, the pro-Musharraf party, had lost their seats. He said those who had won were not so strongly affiliated with the party as to be unacceptable. He said it would take three or four more days of talks to work out a coalition. Sharif and Zardari are due to meet Thursday in Islamabad. Pakistan Peoples Party officials say a coalition between their two parties would be the strongest and best combination. One compelling reason is that Sharif's party is the strongest in the important province of Punjab, Pakistan's most populous. It is likely to form the government there, and so should be part of the national one, too. Any national government that does not have the Punjab government on board is intrinsically unstable, the party officials said.
NAACP checking out OCN report
The Orange County branch of the NAACP is looking into an incident at Orange County National Golf Club, where a noose was reportedly hung from a ceiling of one of the course's offices. The organization learned of the incident after it appeared in the Sentinel on Jan. 18. The Sentinel detailed the PGA Tour's investigation of OCN after former employee David Brice, who is black, said he witnessed a noose in an outside-services office in June and sent a formal complaint to the Tour. The Tour got involved before hosting its Qualifying School at OCN in early December. "Before we put out a position paper or a press conference, we try to do our fact finding," NAACP President Randolph Bracy said. "I find it very repugnant and a serious problem, so we want to find out more." .
