A rare bit of Welsh glory for Edinburgh

AN OVERUSED phrase it might be, but Edinburgh's "top drawer performance" against the Blues in last night's Magners League clash at Cardiff Arms Park, was exactly that. A late drop goal from the outstanding Phil Godman, provided Edinburgh with the perfect start to 2008 and, understandably, left coach Andy Robinson purring with satisfaction. On a night that would have been better suited to a spot of bog-snorkling, Edinburgh produced a measured performance to not only secure a morale-boosting victory away from Murrayfield, but to further improve their chances of lifting the Magners League silverware. Robinson warned that idle talk of championships and title silverware would not be wise in the coming weeks despite his side's recent rejuvenation in the competition. However, there is little doubt that, behind closed doors, the coaching staff and players too, will have grand designs on the Celtic title.

Forth Road Bridge hack redirects to smut bazaar

Updated Hackers turned the Forth Road Bridge website into a filth jamboree after breaking into its systems to plant script designed to redirect surfers to a Turkish site hosting malware.

According to Scottish security outfit Roundtrip Solutions the website of the Forth Estuary Transport Authority (www.feta.gov.uk), which runs the famous suspension bridge in central Scotland, was hacked in order to serve up pop-up ads for porn sites. Roundtrip used AVG's LinkScanner security tool to determine that hackers were taking advantage of the (old and a little obscure) MDAC-RDS ActiveX exploit to launch an iFrame HTML element taken from a website under the control of hackers.

Wexner snags acts on verge of greatness

Before she became an unlikely iPod spokeswoman, a little-known singer named Leslie Feist was on Chuck Helm's radar.

The indie-folk songstress from Canada would make a perfect fit for the arty, in-the-know crowd that frequents the Wexner Center for the Arts, he thought.

"I just kind of had a feeling she was breaking at that point," said Helm, director of performing arts at the center.

Three months ago, he booked Feist for next Sunday as part of the "Next

@ Wex" concert series -- which highlights up-and-coming musical acts.

He turned out to be prophetic: Soon after, the Feist song 1234 appeared in an Apple commercial, and the singer performed on Saturday Night Live and catapulted into the musical mainstream.

Thanks to mounting buzz for Feist (and the center's intensive marketing efforts in blog, print and TV media), the show is almost sold out.

Rockingham Tweaks Its Redistricting Plans

ELKTON — The Rockingham County School Board will hold yet another hearing on school redistricting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Montevideo Middle School.

This is likely to be more harmonious than earlier hearings, when dozens of parents expressed unhappiness with proposed new district boundaries.

Now, under revisions announced at the Feb. 26 meeting of the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors, substantial revisions to the original plan have been made, reducing many complaints resulting from parents concerning the original plan.

"[Supervisors and the school board] did an outstanding job," said parent Melani Tomasi, a participant in a recent protest group centered on Power Dam Road near McGaheysville.

"The new plan reflected the bulk of concerns; they gave the people what they wanted," added Tomasi, whose children would have been shifted from the Montevideo area schools to the new school complex at Elkton, as well as Elkton Middle School.

The weird, ever-evolving world of ARGs

Dan Hon used to start his day like any other law student at Cambridge University. While getting ready for class, he'd check his e-mail, voice mail, maybe do a little preclass preparation. One day while preparing for his finals, he came across the trailer for Steven Spielberg's movie Artificial Intelligence: A.I. and noticed something peculiar in the credits. "Sentient Machine Therapist Jeanine Salla" was listed in between "Costume Designer Bob Ringwood" and "music by John Williams." Finding a machine therapist an odd occupation, Hon decided to Google her name and came up with a surreal website concerning Salla, her life, and her employers. He researched some more, made phone calls, sent e-mails, and eventually found clues, patterns, a game called The Beast, and information all leading to a struggle for robot rights in the year 2142.

Sun's mysterious failure to address the potentially meaty market for renting a web infrastructure to fledgling businesses appears on course for a correction. The company plans to unveil a project code-named Caroline in the next couple of months, offering a "hosting platform for development and delivery of dynamically scalable Internet-based services".
