CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- It's an unlikely matter for the United States and other nations to lock horns over: the administration of names and numbers used to reach Internet sites. Andy Oram Reports 'SOCIAL WEB' HAS FAR TO GO, BUT MUCH PROMISE Andy Oram CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Two ideas, diametrically opposed in philosophy and approach, have seized the attention of Internet companies and technologists over the first few years of this century. Given that the century will be so long and we have barely started yet, it's hard to say which will turn out to be most important. One stresses classification, the other community. These two ideas are attracting both money and attention, but neither has yet borne fruit. Happy New Year, Everyone! People Karl Rove
This was written just before the Super Bowl and Super Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 Thursday, December 20: Walter C. Uhler: Truth, Lies, Errors and Bullshit About Iraq and Iran (3 comments) The thought provoking book, On Bullshit, by Professor Emeritus Harry G. Frankfurt provides a perspective from which to evaluate bullshit flung by the Bush administration, the neocons and the mainstream media. Saturday, November 10: Cindy Sheehan: A New Direction to Disaster (5 comments) A response to Karl Rove's Wall Street Journal Op-ed and the Dem Congress' Iraq policy; In Karl's diatribe against the failed 110th Congress he makes all kinds of misleading and scurrilous claims about Congress. I NEVER thought I would agree with the Master of Sleaze about anything, but taking no joy in my agreement or conclusions, I do agree that the 110th is pretty pitiful, but for obvious different reasons.
Recession-proofing your career
Far less intense and time-consuming than an MBA program is the in-house training that many employers offer in the latest computer software programs, as well as management techniques. In signing up for such training, you win not only if you stay but also if you have to go. Update skills Even if your employer won't pay for updating your skills, do it yourself -- and look at it as a career investment. Elana Zolfo, vice president of corporate programs and continuing education at Dowling College, says she is getting more questions from people she meets at business events regarding what skills they are wise to brush up on in an iffy economy. Among the most popular short-term classes at Dowling, she says, are business writing, marketing, time management, speaking/presentation skills and customer service.
6 Nations: France takes on World Cup nemesis England on pivotal ...
Ashton wants his players to bounce back from the poor second half that allowed Italy to rally from 20-6 down to 23-19 in Rome, hoping that Wigglesworth can help prompt a faster match. Richard will bring us variety and energy, Ashton said. He's a good allround footballer and is a bright guy. I think he'll bring the right players into the game at the right time. Nick Mallett made four changes to his starting lineup as Italy seeks to build upon its strong showing against England. Andrea Marcato will start at fullback in place of injured David Bortolussi, and Alberto Sgarbi will be on the right wing, with both starting for the first time. Simon Picone at scrumhalf and Salvatore Perugini at loosehead prop were the only other changes for Italy. Former captain Marco Bortolami, who missed the first two games of the tournament because of an eye injury, will be in the reserves.
Students found inter-religious council
The council will provide new informational services for all students on campus through weekly e-mails, a single calendar for all religious campus events and a Web site that provides directory information for student religious leaders. In addition to working closely with the Chaplain's office, organizers said they hope to collaborate with the Religious Studies Department. The group differs from the existing Multi-Faith Council, which brings together students of different religious backgrounds for discussions and University-wide religious event planning, Kugler said. While the specifics of many of the council's plans have not yet been decided, she said she is excited about the group's potential to draw together students from across all religious traditions.
US district court judge orders shutdown of whistleblower web site
In an extraordinary act of censorship, lawyers representing the Swiss bank Julius Baer (BJB) obtained an injunction against the Dynadot corporation, US domain name registrar for the Wikileaks web site. Judge Jeffrey White of the Federal District Court in San Francisco issued the injunction February 15 in a lawsuit BJB filed against Wilikeaks and Dynadot. The suit was filed after Wikileaks posted documents allegedly revealing fraudulent activities, including asset-hiding, money laundering and tax evasion schemes, on the part of the banks Cayman Islands branch. BJB claims the documents were stolen and contain customer information protected from disclosure under privacy laws. The website of BJB promotes the bank as the leading dedicated wealth manager in Switzerland, concentrating on private banking and asset management for private and institutional clients. Under the terms of the injunction, Dynadot may not release the registered wikileaks.org domain name, meaning that the Wikileaks web site cannot be reached through the related web address, www.wikileaks.org.
McCain and Obama turn fire on each other
Hillary's attacks against Obama only make her look angry. People are sick of the Clinton's, their antics, their deals, and their arrogance in assuming the presidency should go to the former First Lady who has only served a few years in the Senate and while there, never lead any opposition to Bush's disastrous foreign policies. Had Clinton shown any leadership in the Senate, had she not botched the health care issues Bill threw to her in the first year of his presidency, she might be a credible candidate even though she has no real record of public service and certainly nothing like 35 years as she claims. But HIllary's judgement has always been bad. America needs positive leadership. .
