| Paula Deen pulled herself up to become a celebrity cook
Everything Paula Deen touches turns to butter. That is to say she has spread her homey, gracious style across America with her cookbooks, her classes, and most notably, her programs on the Food Network, "Paula’s Home Cooking" and "Paula’s Party."Now she’s on tour to bring her folksy food wisdom to the masses. She’ll be at the Chicago Theatre later this month to offer family-friendly cooking demonstrations to fans and foodies.Deen had to struggle for success. The Albany, Ga., native lost both her parents as a young adult and had to finish raising her teenage brother. Her marriage to her high school sweetheart soured, and she began having paralyzing panic attacks at age 40.She woke up one day and decided to turn her life around. With only $200, she started a business, The Bag Lady in Savannah, selling meals to businesspeople stuck in their offices at lunchtime.
The Barr Code
Still, all is not lost for the elder statesman from Arizona. In every election, at least some Republican voters have shown themselves as willing as their Democrat counterparts to lay principles aside for electoral victory. Unfortunately for McCain, the number of conservative voters predisposed to do this again this year, after the disappointing experience of the last eight years, is unlikely to be sufficient for him to overcome his considerable ideological baggage, especially since many of those voters already have tasted of much more exciting and principled candidates like Paul and Huckabee. TurboTax, TaxCut court Mac users with new versions
Good news, tax procrastinators—since this is a leap year, you have an extra day to put off filing your 2007 taxes. The bad news, of course, is that even with 24 more hours to table your taxes, you'll still have to finish the job eventually—that April 15 deadline isn't going anywhere. With February soon giving way to March and bringing us another calendar page flip closer to the filing deadline, it's time to pick a program for preparing your tax return. Fortunately, the makers of tax-preparation products have updated their offerings to reflect this year's ever-changing tax laws and to add features aimed at making this annual chore more efficient. For Mac users, the leading providers of tax-prep software are Intuit, with its TurboTax product line, and H&R Block, which makes TaxCut.
McCain: Santorum, Cochran 'Not Most Respected Senators'
Off the top of my head, McCain supports the war on Islamic terrorism, Bush's judicial nominees and pro-life legislation (Hillary voted for the war before she voted against it). Hate to burst your bubble, but Bush IS a moderate-conservative, at least in my reckoning. That said, I have the utmost respect for him, epsecially considering that he managed to get elected. .
Pride in a pioneering dozen
Explore the role of volunteerism in community affairs. Start a scrapbook, poster or bulletin board display featuring African-Americans who have made a contribution to their communities. Find pictures, articles or editorials in the newspaper. You may want to divide the display into six sections and label the following: (a) Government (b) Education (c) Social Services (d) Civil Rights (e) Neighborhoods (f) Environment. When you discover an individual that interests you, do further research about their background and add the information to the collection. 5. Character education and service learning. If you have done volunteering (service learning) in your school or community, share your personal experiences and observations with your class. If you have not done any service learning, interview the director of a nonprofit agency or organization who uses volunteer help.
Mosso's utility hosting turns Impressionistic
As web-based, on-demand computing continues to grow in popularity, there will be plenty of twisting and turning as companies feel the market out. Pricing, of course, is at the top of the service provider's minds — and we're bound to see a fair share of alternative cost models. .
Hockey wives and abortion
They have cute websites designed to appeal to teenage girls, lots of advice about boys — giggle — and sites on MySpace. They take great care to look like kindly counselling centres. In fact, they exist solely to prevent abortion. Planned Parenthood told me it frequently talks to women who went to these apparently welcoming places for counselling on the three options — abortion, adoption and parenting. The group says women report feeling badly treated. Charity's rewards The problem is worse than just some hockey fans inadvertently donating to a cause they may oppose — that is a personal issue between a fan and her team (in my case, the Canadiens). What irks is that our tax dollars are involved. The raffle money is channelled through the Sens Foundation, the team's registered charity arm, which is matching every dollar raised by The Better Halves.
